each-way betting for bettors: two bets in one, and when the place half pays

Each-way is two bets on the same horse at half the stake each: a win bet at full odds and a place bet at a fraction of the odds. This guide covers how place terms change with field size and race type, the arithmetic with fully worked examples, when the place half is the value and when it is a quiet tax, and the trick of pricing the place bet on its own before you commit. what each-way betting is

An each-way bet (EW) is two bets on the same horse: a win bet and a place bet, each for half the total stake. The win leg pays the full odds if the horse wins; the place leg pays a fraction of the odds — usually 1/4 or 1/5 — if the horse finishes in the places: two in small fields, three in bigger ones, up to five in large handicaps. £10 each-way is £10 to win plus £10 to place, £20 in total.

Two things follow. An each-way doubles your stake on one horse: a bigger position than a straight win bet, not a safer one. And the place leg is a bet on the place market, with its own prices and margin. Most punters treat it as a free extra; it must earn its keep.

place terms: field size and race type

Place terms — how many places and at what fraction — depend on the number of runners and whether the race is a handicap. Typical terms at the big UK books are these; special offers change them, so check the racecard. In non-handicaps: 2 to 4 runners pay win only; 5 to 7 pay 2 places at 1/4; 8 or more pay 3 places at 1/5. Handicaps: 5 to 7 pay 2 places at 1/4; 8 to 11 pay 3 places at 1/5; 12 to 15 pay 3 places at 1/4; 16 or more pay 4 places at 1/4.

Handicaps add places because the field is bunched by design: a place is worth less, so the book pays out on more runners. Extra-place offers stretch this further, with many books paying 5 places on the big handicaps. The fraction matters as much as the count: 1/4 on 4 places beats 1/5 on 3.

worked example: £10 each-way at 8/1

The classic shape: 1/5 the odds in a race of 8 or more runners. £10 each-way at 8/1 is £10 to win and £10 to place, £20 staked. The place leg pays 1/5 of 8/1, which is 8/5: decimal 2.60, an implied probability of 38.5% that the horse places.

Run the place-only outcome first. The win leg loses its £10. The place leg returns £10 × 2.60 = £26. £26 back from £20 staked: a £6 profit, and the horse has not won. Now run the win. The win leg returns £10 at 8/1 = £90, and the place leg returns its £26 as well, because a winner is always a placer. £116 back from £20: a £96 profit.

Compare a straight £20 win bet at the same 8/1: £180 back if it wins, a £160 profit, nothing if it does not. The each-way gives up £64 of win upside — £160 down to £96 — for the £26 safety net that pays £6 whenever the horse merely places.

worked example: a big handicap at 1/4 the odds

Now a 16-runner handicap with 4 places at 1/4 the odds, the most generous standard terms. £5 each-way at 12/1 is £10 staked, £5 to win and £5 to place. The place leg pays 1/4 of 12/1, which is 3/1: decimal 4.00, an implied 25% chance of placing.

If the horse only places, the place leg returns £5 × 4.00 = £20, the win leg loses its £5, and the £10 stake returns £20: a £10 profit. If it wins, the win leg returns £5 at 12/1 = £65 and the place leg adds its £20: £85 back from £10 staked, a £75 profit. Same structure, kinder terms: at 1/4 with 4 places the place leg carries far more of the return.

the maths: two bets, two value checks

An each-way is two separate bets and needs two separate value checks. The win half is judged with the implied probability method: convert the price and compare it with your honest estimate. The place half is the same exercise on the place price: win odds times place fraction, plus 1 for the stake back. At 8/1 with 1/5 terms the place price is 8/5, decimal 2.60, and the break-even place rate is 1 ÷ 2.60 = 38.5%: rate the horse above that and the place half is a value bet on its own.

The odds converter does the chain: enter the win price, then apply the place fraction and read the place price's implied probability beside it. It usually shows the halves are not equally good: an 8/1 horse whose win price implies 11.1% can carry a place price implying 38.5% while you rate it 50% to place in a three-place race; the place half is then the better bet.

when each-way is +EV, and when it isn't

The place market is systematically fatter than the win market: a typical win book sums to about 105%. In the same race the place book runs much higher: take an 8-runner non-handicap at 1/5 terms, where the place prices imply roughly 59%, 56%, 50%, 44%, 39%, 33%, 26% and 24%, summing to about 330% — and since three of eight runners place, the true sum is 300%, leaving a place overround near 110%, twice the win margin. Books shade place prices harder because punters treat the place half as a throwaway; that margin is the tax it pays every race.

That fat margin is where the value lives. Big fields: more places raises a decent runner's true place chance while the fraction stays fixed, and 16-runner handicaps at 1/4 odds routinely underprice consistent each-way types: stayers, course specialists, horses that always run their race. Extra places: a book paying 5 places instead of 4 adds a whole position at no cost, and a 12/1 shot at 3/1 the place, with a true 30% chance, is +20% on the place half. Place prices get less attention, so genuine errors survive longer there.

The bad each-way races are as clear. Short-priced favourites: a 2/1 favourite at 1/5 terms places at 2/5, an implied 71.4%, and a 1/2 favourite at 1/10, an implied 90.9% — the place half is nearly dead weight, a second margin paid to insure the likeliest placer. Small fields: 2 to 4 runners have no place market, and 5 to 7 runner races on 2 places at 1/4 carry the most brutal place overround. And any race where the win bet is poor: each-way doubles the stake on a losing idea.

each-way vs straight win vs dutching

A straight win bet puts the whole stake on the win price: maximum upside, nothing back unless it wins. An each-way splits it, half on win and half on place: lower win upside plus the place ticket. Compare on value, not feeling: the each-way is the win bet plus a side bet, and if the side bet is −EV the each-way is strictly worse than the straight win bet. The dutching tie-in is the sharpest version of the idea. The place half is a bet on the place market, and that market can be dutched: in a 4-place handicap, three runners you believe fill the frame can be dutched to pay whenever any places, sized by the dutching calculator like a win dutch. When place value is strong across several runners, backing each of them each-way beats dutching the win market: you keep the win upside and collect place tickets besides.

the each-way trick: price the place half alone

Here is the routine that separates the bettors from the punters. Take the win price, apply the place fraction, and ask whether you would back the horse at that place price on its own. 8/1 at 1/5 terms is 8/5. 12/1 at 1/4 terms is 3/1. Would you take 3/1 on the horse to place? If yes, the each-way is a win bet with a genuine value side bet attached. If no, you are buying a place ticket you would never buy alone.

The same trick catches every mistake. Check the place price against the exchange: if the exchange quotes 3/1 to place while the book pays 8/5, the place half is bad value however much you like the horse. Check extra places the same way: 4 at 1/4 beats 3 at 1/5, and a 5-place offer on a 16-runner handicap adds a whole position for free. A short routine before any each-way, in order: confirm the terms on the racecard — places and fraction change with field size, race type and book; convert the win price to the place price and read its implied probability; price the place half alone and refuse the bet if you would not take that price on its own; write down your own place estimate and check it beats the place price, the value betting test on the place market; prefer each-way in big fields and handicaps with extra places; skip short-priced favourites and fields of 7 or fewer; size the place half as its own position with the staking calculator; and compare the total stake with a straight win bet of the same size to price the insurance. the honest endnote

Each-way betting is a way of shaping a bet, not a way of creating value. The place half cannot rescue a bad win bet, and a bad place half quietly taxes every each-way; the two legs must earn their keep. Done properly, with the place price checked like any other price, the place half becomes a genuine second opinion on the same horse — and in big handicaps it is often the better half.
